The co-wrote thing comes from the Live album of Bruce, where it mentions her, even though he used his version without any of her lyrics.

And guess what, none of us knows if it was a finished song or not by the time the producer handed Patti that tape. Why does it matter anyway? It's a good song performed by both. As far as I know, Bruce never used Patti lyrics of that song. Get on the search box and type "Because the Night Bruce Springsteen Paris 85" and you will see Bruce singing his own version.

For me, the magical hook of the entire song is the image of the hard, plain, rough around the edges, rode-hard-and-put-up-wet Patti erotically growling the totally feminine "Take me now...take me now...take me now...".
