Dec 21, 2009 - Perhaps you should at least consider a modicum of respect even if you do not like what you hear. Sutherland had one of the all time great careers in opera; thrilling countless listeners. If you do not have the capacity to figure out why, don't you think you are the one lacking? In light of what she has achieved vs your lack of respect, the question is 'who exactly are you'?
Rsutherland8 Says:
Dec 21, 2009 - I beg your pardon 'cer1n'...
NovaCarthago Says:
Jan 6, 2010 - la sutherland è un mito...che voce fantastica perfetta. ma oggi chi canta così? più nessuno
maipisimo67 Says:
Jan 23, 2010 - Brava !
Hako2004 Says:
Mar 24, 2010 - It was a D and lasted seven seconds by my count. Only seven seconds....hmmm. Perhaps you would show us the many posts here on YouTube of other sopranos sustaining high Ds longer? I suspect there are few, because doing so isn't easy, certainly not at age 59.
DazFromOz Says:
Apr 12, 2010 - this is just magic... thank you for posting it. Opera just isn't any fun any more since she retired!
camarge Says:
Apr 15, 2010 - extraordinary!
Eiswirth1 Says:
May 3, 2010 - @JessyeNormanFan No, opera is about the voice first and foremost. If I want drama I'll see a play.
ChrisStockslager Says:
May 5, 2010 - @DazFromOz I agree. Who the hell do we have now to sing all these masterworks? Nobody.
AOG93 Says:
May 21, 2010 - @Eiswirth1 Then why did the composers set the music to a DRAMATIC PLOT DEMANDING PERFORMANCE AND EMOTION instead of just writing cantatas, serenatas, arias??? Many of your favourite composers would snarl at you, you know.
iriisblue Says:
Jul 3, 2010 - @Hako2004 Callasites mistakenly link ugly with dramatic.
Elisabetta611 Says:
Jul 21, 2010 - @iriisblue Ridiculous. Utterly ridiculous.
Elisabetta611 Says:
Jul 21, 2010 - @Eiswirth1 Opera is about the drama AND the music. It isn't an empty parade of pretty sounds.
sevoflurane Says:
Jul 24, 2010 - @Elisabetta611 how very true! and i would add that single notes are meaningless, if they are not actually making part of an interesting phrase.
vocalissimo1 Says:
Jul 25, 2010 - Things I love about this clip: Joan's ability to dominate an ensemble without even trying; the fact that, although Joan holds the high D for an eternity, she looks as though she could have kept going for another half hour; the football-crowd reaction of the audience; the genuine disbelief of Joan's colleagues at her vocal prodigality; the leonine impact of Joan's hairstyle; and Joan's immediate instinct to acknowlege her colleagues in the midst of an almighty uproar intended mainly for her.
diuscorvus Says:
Aug 9, 2010 - this was enjoyable, but why 'shuidishi'? i wish sutherland had a stronger attack on notes, and some of the upward transpositions made the music unrecognizable. the whole effect is of something carefully engineered. i suppose the cautions she and her husband took helped her career going. nevertheless sutherland's voice is still BIG, and the top D is quite nice.
iriisblue Says:
Aug 11, 2010 - @Elisabetta611 Actually, an "empty parade" is exactly what opera has become, particularly with the precipitous decline in vocal standards. Surprised that a dilettante could be so inadvertently succinct.
iriisblue Says:
Aug 11, 2010 - @vocalissimo1 Always the modest paragon.
Elisabetta611 Says:
Aug 12, 2010 - @iriisblue Spare me your condescending garbage. If you like a soulless robotic performance, enjoy this by all means. I'd rather listen to Callas or Gencer as Anna. End of story.
Alain2884 Says:
Aug 26, 2010 - Wow, simply breath taking, how many sopranos can or have the guts to pull off something like this at the age of 59??? Wonderful!!!!!
Richiesutherland Says:
Aug 31, 2010 - @Elisabetta611 Then please do listen to Gencer glottal her way meaninglessly through all music (her coup de glotte, comical in itself, negates all meaning by her tasteless overuse. And please, listen to Callas and her succession of awful high notes, HER tasteless chest and glottal attacks, her tacky attempts at high notes in the Mexico Aida or, worst of all, the appalling high Eb at the end of the Act II Traviata concertato, where a woman dying of consumption screams out a high Eb!
Elisabetta611 Says:
Aug 31, 2010 - @Richiesutherland If you want to reduce singers to their faults, how about Sutherland's awful diction? Her transposing? Her tacky, added high notes EVERYWHERE? Callas, tasteless? I don't think so. And the E-flat in the Mexico Aida is LEGENDARY. If you don't like dramatic, thrilling performances, don't listen to them. But why am I even talking to a person who does such a thing? Fanatics like you cannot be reasoned with. Go listen to Joanie, ignore all the other great ones and leave me alone.
Richiesutherland Says:
Aug 31, 2010 - @Elisabetta611 God, you are appalling. You want ME to leave YOU alone, when you come on here and attack Joan? You want To me, Callas is an exemplar of bad taste: the aforementioned atrocities to Verdi, the belched chest notes in Sonnambula of all places. Dear, I like some of Callas, YOU are the "Callas Uber Alles" fanatic, not I! Callas fans--all the same, intolerant and self-righteous warped minds. Love Callas, but please not on Joan's time. Via, buffone!
Elisabetta611 Says:
Sep 1, 2010 - @Richiesutherland I did not attack Joan, dear. (Not any worse than your ridiculous remarks on Gencer & Callas) All I said was that I prefer others in this music and that she did this role too late. I love Sutherland in several roles. (I.E. Lakme, Norma, Marie) As for me being Callas only: Check out my Favorites. I LOVE many other sopranos. You only have Sutherland in your Favorites, how come? All the same? Prejudiced much? Via, hypocrite! *Block button*
